Lady Gaga heads to Vegas with dual shows

August 07, 2018

NEW YORK: Pop star Lady Gaga on Tuesday announced a residency in Las Vegas with twin shows to display her two sides -- extravagant and glitzy, and stripped back and jazzy.

At 32, Lady Gaga is unusually young and culturally prominent to launch a residency in Sin City, generally the preserve of older artists who either want to set up elaborate productions away from the rigors of the road or to cash in on the nostalgia of tourists.
Lady Gaga said her shows would begin on December 28 at the newly rebranded Park MGM, a giant complex on the Las Vegas Strip which was initially built as the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in the style of the Mediterranean gambling hub.
The synth-pop star once known for her eye-popping attire and ultra-extroverted sexuality plans two shows, with one, entitled "Lady Gaga Enigma," promising more of her theatrics.
"We´re creating a show unlike anything I´ve done before. It will be a celebration of all that is unique and different within us," she said in a statement.
"The challenges of bravery can be overcome with creativity and courage that is grown out of adversity, love and music."
The other show, "Lady Gaga Jazz and Piano," will star her singing minimalist versions of her songs as well as pop standards.
Gaga refashioned her career four years ago when she teamed up with classic crooner Tony Bennett, who is six decades her senior.
She similarly adopted a more mature sound on her latest album, "Joanne," which veered into country music with lyrics about family ties.
Lady Gaga announced "Enigma" shows through November 2019 with only a handful of the stripped-back concerts.

Britain´s storm in a tea cup settled, the milk goes in last!

August 07, 2018

LONDON: Although many cultural debates may be brewing in Britain, it appears that one age-old bone of contention has been settled: Should milk go in a cup of tea first or last?

Drinking tea is considered one of Britain´s favourite past-times, but its rituals have divided connoisseurs for centuries, and served as a social class marker.
The most contentious issue has been when to add milk, but a poll published Tuesday reveals that four times more Britons believe that it should be poured in at the end, rather than the beginning.
The YouGov Omnibus survey found that 79 percent favoured adding milk last, with 20 percent disagreeing.
The split was even more marked across the generations, with 96 percent of 18-24 year-olds believing it should be added first, compared to 32 percent of over 65-year-olds.
The issue was tackled by author George Orwell in his 1946 essay "A Nice Cup of Tea", where he wrote "indeed in every family in Britain there are probably two schools of thought on the subject".
It was believed to have class connotations, with the aristocracy showing off their expensive china cups by adding boiling water first -- a practice that would reputedly shatter cheaper vessels.
But the latest poll indicates no preference according to class, with the middle and working classes both

New drugs put cancer into permanent sleep: Aussie research

August 07, 2018
SYDNEY: Australian scientists on Thursday said they have discovered a new type of drug that targets specific proteins to arrest the growth and spread of cancer, without the harmful side effects of conventional therapies.
The drugs, which put cancer cells into a "permanent sleep" without damaging DNA, have "already shown great promise in halting cancer progression in models of blood and liver cancers, as well as in delaying cancer relapse," the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research facility said in a statement highlighting its research.
The new method is the first to target the KAT6A and KAT6B proteins, which are known to play an important role in driving cancer, said the institute''s Associate Professor Tim Thomas.
"This new class of anti-cancer drugs was effective in preventing cancer progression in our preclinical cancer models.
We are extremely excited about the potential that they hold as an entirely new weapon for fighting cancer," said Thomas, who co-led the research published in scientific journal Nature.
"The compound was well tolerated in our preclinical models and is very potent against tumor cells, while appearing not to adversely affect healthy cells.
" "Rather than causing potentially dangerous DNA damage, as chemotherapy and radiotherapy do, this new class of anti-cancer drugs simply puts cancer cells into a permanent sleep," said research co-leader Associate Professor Anne Voss, also from the institute.
"This new class of compounds stops cancer cells dividing by switching off their ability to ''trigger'' the start of the cell cycle," she said.
"The cells are not dead, but they can no longer divide and proliferate.
" The findings point to a "potent, precise and clean compound that appears to be safe and effective" in preclinical models, said research co-leader Professor Jonathan Baell from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
"Our teams are now working on developing this compound into a drug that is appropriate for human trials.

Women more likely to die of heart attack if doctor is male: study

August 07, 2018
FLORIDA: Women suffering heart attacks in hospital emergency rooms in the United States are more likely to die if their doctor is a man than a woman, warned a study Monday.
The study was based on more than 500,000 patients admitted to hospital emergency departments for acute myocardial infarction -- a medical term for heart attack -- in Florida between 1991 and 2010.
Researchers at Harvard University found a "stark" difference in survival according to whether the patient´s and doctor´s gender matched.
Namely, when women were treated by female doctors, "there was a significant and positive effect" on survival, said the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Almost 12 percent of patients die when rushed for emergency treatment for a heart attack.
Matching female doctors to female patients "reduced the probability of death by 5.4 percent, relative to this baseline," it said.
By another way of looking at the data, "female patients treated by male physicians were 1.52 percent less likely to survive than male patients treated by female physicians."
Previous studies have shown that women are more likely than men to die of heart attacks.
But why? Some experts have suggested it may be because women´s symptoms are different than men´s, or that they tend to delay treatment more often than men.
This study offers a new explanation for why gender inequality in heart attack mortality persists.
"Most physicians are male, and male physicians appear to have trouble treating female patients," said the report.
Researchers found that the more women a male doctor treated in his life, the less likely his female patients were to die.
However, this presented a "catch-22" because it suggests a certain number of women must die so that the doctor could learn from his mistakes.
"This decrease may come at the expense of earlier female patients," said the report.
One problem is that most doctors are male, so matching female doctors to female patients just isn´t possible much of the time.
The solution may be simply to add more female doctors in emergency departments, researchers argued.
"Given the cost of male physicians´ learning on the job, it may be more effective to increase the presence of female physicians."
